About
Edward Vincent Bracken was born on February 7, 1915, in Astoria, Queens, New York, the son of Joseph L. and Catherine Bracken. He began performing in vaudeville at the age of nine and went on to become a prominent figure in American theater, film, radio, and television over a career spanning several decades. He died on November 14, 2002, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, at the age of 87, from complications following surgery for a crushed disk in his neck.
Bracken's Broadway career extended from 1933 to 1981, encompassing productions across multiple genres. He appeared in Too Many Girls, So Proudly We Hail, Shinbone Alley, Hello, Dolly!, The Odd Couple, The Sunshine Boys, and Sugar Babies, among other productions. His work in So Proudly We Hail dates to 1936, when the Joseph Viertel military drama, co-starring Richard Cromwell, opened at the 46th Street Theatre and closed after 14 performances. His role in Too Many Girls led directly to his film breakthrough, as he reprised the part in the 1940 screen adaptation. Bracken received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical in 1978. His final Broadway appearance came at the age of 77 in the musical Dreamtime, directed by David Niles at the Ed Sullivan Theater.
His Hollywood prominence arrived in 1944, when director Preston Sturges cast him in two films released that year: The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, opposite Betty Hutton, and Hail the Conquering Hero. Both films have since been preserved by the National Film Registry. The success of these pictures made Bracken a widely recognized name during the World War II era, a period during which he also maintained a radio presence, including his own program, The Eddie Bracken Show.
Bracken left Hollywood in 1953 and returned to the stage. In 1970, he purchased the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami, Florida, for one million dollars. He also maintained a long association with the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey, appearing in dozens of productions through the 1980s and into the early 2000s. Among those productions was Show Boat, in which he played Captain Andy Hawkes; that production was broadcast on PBS in 1990.
After nearly three decades away from feature films, Bracken returned to cinema in character roles. These included the Walley World theme park founder Mr. Roy Walley in National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), the toy store owner Mr. Duncan in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), and appearances in Oscar (1991), Rookie of the Year (1993), and Baby's Day Out (1994). His television work between 1952 and 2000 included an episode of The Golden Girls, in which he played Rose Nylund's ex-childhood boyfriend from St. Olaf, and an episode of Tales from the Darkside in which he portrayed a man who refuses to accept that he has died. For his contributions to radio and television, Bracken received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 1651 Vine Street and 6751 Hollywood Boulevard.
Bracken met his wife, Connie Nickerson, a former actress, while both performed in a road company production of the Broadway play What a Life in 1938. They were married for 63 years and had five children together: sons Michael and David, and daughters Judy, Carolyn, and Susan. Connie Bracken died in August 2002, three months before her husband's death.
