About

Edward Matthew Lauter Jr. was born on October 30, 1938, in Long Beach, New York, where he was also raised. His mother, Sally Lee, had worked as a Broadway actress and dancer in the 1920s. Lauter was of German and Irish descent. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University in 1961, having played basketball during his time there. Following graduation, he served two years in the United States Army. Before pursuing acting, he worked as a stand-up comedian.

Lauter's first acting credit came in 1968 with a small part in the Broadway production of The Great White Hope, a boxing drama. His Broadway work continued through 1986 and also included the play The Front Page. His screen career began with a 1971 episode of the television series Mannix, and his first theatrical film appearance followed in the 1972 Western Dirty Little Billy. He went on to appear in more than 200 films and television episodes across a career spanning over four decades.

Standing 6'2" with a distinctive balding appearance, Lauter built a substantial body of work as a character actor. Among his prominent film roles were The Longest Yard (1974), Breakheart Pass (1975), King Kong (1976), Magic (1978), Death Hunt (1981), Timerider (1982), Cujo (1983), Death Wish 3 (1985), My Blue Heaven (1990), The Rocketeer (1991), Seraphim Falls (2006), and The Artist (2011). He appeared alongside Bruce Dern, Barbara Harris, Karen Black, and William Devane in Alfred Hitchcock's final film, Family Plot. Hitchcock sought Lauter for a major role in his planned follow-up, a romantic espionage thriller titled The Short Night, but the project never reached production due to the director's declining health and death in 1980.

On television, Lauter played the villain sheriff Martin Stillman in the How the West Was Won series and accumulated guest appearances on numerous programs, including The X-Files, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Law & Order, Kojak, The A-Team, Miami Vice, Magnum P.I., Highlander: The Series, Charmed, The Waltons, The Streets of San Francisco, and The Equalizer. He held a recurring role as Fire Captain Dannaker on ER.

Lauter was married four times and had four children from previous marriages. He continued working until a few months before his death, completing roles in several films that remained unreleased at the time. He died of mesothelioma on October 16, 2013, at the age of 74, and is survived by his fourth wife, Mia Lauter, and his four children.
