About
Ebon Che Moss-Bachrach is an American actor born on March 19, 1977, in New York City. His middle name was chosen by his parents in honor of the Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara. His father was born in Germany to Jewish-American parents, and his parents operated a music school in Springfield, Massachusetts. Moss-Bachrach attended Amherst Regional High School in Massachusetts, where he joined the school band and developed an enthusiasm for performance. He went on to study at Columbia University, initially declaring American history and music studies as his majors before switching to English Literature, from which he graduated with a B.A. in 1999. During his third year, he spent a semester studying abroad in Alicante, Spain.
As a child, Moss-Bachrach was drawn to theater, film, and reading, counting Isaac Asimov and Piers Anthony among his favorite authors and describing himself as an "escapist." His formal interest in acting began during his first year at Columbia, when an acting class prompted him to pursue the craft seriously. He subsequently apprenticed at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and later trained in the Meisner technique at the William Esper Studio in New York City.
Moss-Bachrach built his screen career across a range of television projects. He portrayed John Quincy Adams in HBO's miniseries John Adams and investigative journalist John Carreyrou in Hulu's The Dropout. His television profile rose substantially when he was cast as Desi in HBO's Girls, a role that began as a recurring part before he became a series regular for the show's final three seasons, from 2014 to 2017. He appeared as David "Micro" Lieberman in the first season of Marvel's The Punisher in 2017 and held a major role in NOS4A2 from 2019 to 2020. He also appeared in the first season of Andor in 2022 and played a supporting role in the 2023 comedy film No Hard Feelings opposite Jennifer Lawrence.
His most prominent television role to date is that of restaurant manager Richie Jerimovich in the FX on Hulu comedy-drama series The Bear, which premiered in 2022. The performance earned Moss-Bachrach two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, along with two Golden Globe Award nominations. In July 2025, he starred as Ben Grimm / The Thing in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, with the role set to continue in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. In September 2025, he became a signatory of the Film Workers for Palestine boycott pledge.
Moss-Bachrach made his Broadway debut in the spring of 2026, appearing opposite Jon Bernthal in Stephen Adly Guirgis's stage adaptation of Dog Day Afternoon. The production marked his first credit on the New York stage.
In his personal life, Moss-Bachrach has been married to Ukrainian photographer and artist Yelena Yemchuk since the 2000s; the two met at a dinner party in New York City and began a relationship approximately a year and a half later. They have two daughters, Sasha, born in 2007, and Maribelle, born in 2010, and reside in Brooklyn Heights, New York.
