About
Earle Grey was a British-Irish actor born on February 4, 1892, in Dublin, Ireland. He is recognized as a pioneer of early television, having appeared in what is considered the first play broadcast on experimental television in the United Kingdom, and he maintained an active stage career spanning Broadway, Canada, and England across several decades.
On July 14, 1930, Grey took part in an experimental television broadcast of Luigi Pirandello's one-act play The Man with a Flower in His Mouth. The production was created for early television by Lance Sieveking using John Logie Baird's 30-line mechanical television system. According to Baird's own account, the cast consisted of three performers: Grey, Gladys Young, and Lionel Millard. Contemporary and subsequent accounts identify this broadcast as the first play transmitted on experimental television in the United Kingdom.
Grey's Broadway career ran from 1930 to 1940 and included appearances in Romeo and Juliet, Geneva, and The Matriarch. He wed Mary Godwin, and the couple relocated to Canada in 1939, where together they founded the Earle Grey Shakespeare Company, an organization later known as the Earle Grey Players. The company toured Shakespeare productions across Canada through the late 1950s. During his years in Canada, Grey also appeared as an actor in Scope in 1949 and Probation Officer in 1959.
Grey and his wife departed Canada in 1960 and returned to England, where both continued to work as actors until the ends of their lives. Mary Godwin died in 1971, and Grey died in 1978. In 1972, the ACTRA Awards established the Earle Grey Award in his honor to recognize outstanding performances in Canadian television. When the ACTRA Awards were rebranded as the Gemini Awards in 1986, the honor was reframed as a lifetime achievement award for television acting.
