About

Earl Carpenter, born on 9 May 1970, is an English musical theatre actor and singer whose career has been centered primarily on London's West End. Trained at the Jellicoe Theatre and Poole College of Further Education in Bournemouth, Carpenter built his reputation through sustained association with two landmark productions: Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera, both of which he performed across multiple decades.

Carpenter's professional stage career began in 1995 when he joined the West End production of Les Misérables as an understudy for Inspector Javert. He went on to become one of the most frequently returning performers in that production's history. In 2008, he took on the principal role of Javert in the West End, then reprised it the following year on the 25th Anniversary UK Tour. He returned to the role again in 2011 in the West End, and in 2013 and 2016 performed the character in new productions staged in Canada, the Philippines, and Singapore. In 2019, 2020, and 2021, he understudied Michael Ball and Bradley Jaden in the West End concert productions of Les Misérables, and also covered the role during the 2021 UK and Ireland tour.

His Broadway credit came in 2014, when he appeared in the Broadway production of Les Misérables, reprising his role as Inspector Javert in the second Broadway revival.

Carpenter's connection to The Phantom of the Opera began in 2003, when he joined the West End production as standby for the title role. Two years later he was elevated to principal, replacing John Owen-Jones, before being succeeded in the role by Ramin Karimloo. He returned to the Phantom in 2011 and 2012 in the West End, and in 2012 took over the role on the 25th Anniversary UK Tour, again replacing John Owen-Jones, who departed the tour in September of that year. In March 2015, he returned to the West End production of The Phantom of the Opera as emergency cover. In 2023, he stepped back into the role in the West End for two months, replacing Killian Donnelly before being succeeded by Jon Robyns.

Beyond these two signature productions, Carpenter played the Beast in the closing cast of the original West End production of Beauty and the Beast and appeared as Gaston in the UK tour of the same show. He portrayed Joe Gillis in the UK tour of Sunset Boulevard and took on the role of Monsieur André in the Italian tour of The Phantom of the Opera. His concert work includes performing the Bishop of Digne in Les Misérables in Concert: The 25th Anniversary at the O2 Arena and in Les Misérables: The Staged Concert at both the Gielgud Theatre and the Sondheim Theatre, where he also understudied Javert. He played the Auctioneer in The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall. On 5 December 2011, as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations for The Phantom of the Opera, Carpenter performed the title song at the Royal Variety Performance at The Lowry in Manchester alongside Nicole Scherzinger and three other former Phantoms — Simon Bowman, John Owen-Jones, and Ramin Karimloo. The performance was broadcast on ITV1 on 14 December 2011.

Carpenter's recordings include the original London cast recordings of Beauty and the Beast and The Witches of Eastwick, a UK tour promotional recording of Sunset Boulevard, the 25th Anniversary Tour cast recording of Les Misérables, and the cast recordings of both The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall and Les Misérables: The All Star Staged Concert.

Outside of performing, Carpenter has served as creative producer and owner of Ginger Boy Productions Limited since 2006. In 2018, he funded and produced a production of Disney's Peter Pan Jnr at the Regent Centre in Christchurch, Dorset. He holds the position of patron and associate artist at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton and has accepted a visiting professorship at Solent University.
