About

Dylan Mulvaney is an American actress, singer, and social media personality born on December 29, 1996, in San Diego, California. She grew up in the Del Mar Heights and Carmel Valley neighborhoods and was raised in a devout Catholic family. Her father, James F. Mulvaney Jr., works as an insurance executive and philanthropist. Her grandfather, James F. Mulvaney Sr., was an investment banker and attorney who served as president of the United States National Bank of San Diego and president of the San Diego Padres. Mulvaney attended Cathedral Catholic High School, where she participated in the glee club, before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theater from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music in 2019.

Following her graduation, Mulvaney built a stage career that included Broadway national tours, Off-Broadway productions, and work at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre. Her Broadway-affiliated credits span from 2012 to 2021 and include The Book of Mormon and SIX: The Musical. In The Book of Mormon, she played the role of Elder White, a part that took her on tour through the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Additional stage work included How the Grinch Stole Christmas! at the Old Globe Theatre, 8 at the Birch North Park Theatre, Next to Normal at Arts Off Broadway, and productions of Legally Blonde, Spring Awakening, Bye Bye Birdie, and High School Musical at ACT San Diego.

When the COVID-19 pandemic halted stage work in 2020, Mulvaney began posting videos to TikTok. She came out as a transgender woman during the pandemic while living in San Diego, and in March 2022 she launched a daily TikTok video series documenting her gender transition, titled Days of Girlhood. The series grew rapidly in popularity. In September 2022, Mulvaney made her modeling debut at New York Fashion Week, walking the runway for Jessica Jade. That same month, she appeared in a podcast for the cosmetics brand Ulta Beauty alongside genderfluid hairstylist David Lopez, during which she discussed her childhood, her coming out, and her transition. She also became a spokesperson for Kate Spade New York in 2022.

In October 2022, Mulvaney participated in a presidential forum organized by NowThis News, during which she interviewed U.S. President Joe Biden on the subject of legislation restricting gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Biden described such legislation as "outrageous" and "immoral." The interview drew significant attention and made Mulvaney the target of criticism from conservative figures, including Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn and media personality Caitlyn Jenner. In December 2022, Mulvaney confirmed on Instagram that she had undergone facial feminization surgery, and she made her red carpet debut at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards on February 5, 2023.

In late February 2023, Mulvaney accepted a Queerties Groundbreaker Award in Hollywood. On March 13, 2023, she hosted a livestreamed variety show at the Rainbow Room in Midtown Manhattan, titled Dylan Mulvaney's Day 365 Live!, marking the first anniversary of her Days of Girlhood series, with L Morgan Lee and Reneé Rapp appearing as guest stars. U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris sent a congratulatory letter for the occasion, which Mulvaney shared on Instagram.

On April 1, 2023, Mulvaney promoted Bud Light on Instagram in connection with the NCAA's March Madness tournament. The post prompted a conservative-led boycott of the brand, extensive coverage on Fox News that referred to Mulvaney in transphobic terms, and bomb threats directed at several Budweiser factories. Singer Kid Rock posted a video of himself shooting cases of Bud Light. Mulvaney also promoted a Nike sports bra and Maybelline products in sponsored Instagram posts that same month, each generating additional boycott calls. Mulvaney addressed the events publicly in a video posted in late June 2023.

In September 2023, Mulvaney walked the runway for The Blonds Spring 2024 collection at New York Fashion Week. By 2023, her TikTok following had surpassed 10 million, and her Days of Girlhood series had accumulated over one billion views. That year she received a Streamy Award and Attitude's Woman of the Year Award, and in November 2023 she was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

In 2024, Mulvaney released her debut single, also titled "Days of Girlhood," through the independent digital distribution service DistroKid. The track reached number one on the Genius lyrics chart within a week of its release. In 2025, she published her memoir, Paper Doll: Notes from a Late Bloomer, returned to stage acting with multiple appearances, and made a guest appearance in the Apple TV+ historical drama series The Buccaneers.
