About
William Dwight Schultz was born on November 24, 1947, in Baltimore, Maryland, and is of German descent and Roman Catholic faith. He attended Calvert Hall College High School and Towson University before pursuing a career in acting.
Schultz appeared on Broadway between 1978 and 1979, with credits including Night and Day, The Crucifer of Blood, and Happiness. His stage work preceded the television roles that would bring him wider recognition.
On television, Schultz became widely known for portraying Captain "Howling Mad" Murdock on the 1980s action series The A-Team, a role that served as his career breakthrough. In the early 1990s, he took on the recurring role of Lieutenant Reginald Barclay in Star Trek: The Next Generation, later reprising the character in Star Trek: Voyager and the feature film Star Trek: First Contact. In 1992, he appeared in the television film Child of Rage, playing opposite Mel Harris as a couple who adopt a girl who has been sexually abused. In November 2009, Schultz confirmed he and former A-Team co-star Dirk Benedict would make cameo appearances in the feature film adaptation of The A-Team.
His film work includes The Fan (1981) and Fat Man and Little Boy (1989), in which he starred as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. In voice acting, Schultz provided the character Dr. Animo in the Ben 10 animated series, Chef Mung Daal in the children's series Chowder, and Eddie the Squirrel in CatDog, among other roles.
Schultz hosted a conservative talk-radio podcast called Howling Mad Radio, which concluded in March 2009, and guest-hosted on programs including The Savage Nation, The Jerry Doyle Show, and The Rusty Humphries Show. Beginning in 2012, he made regular appearances on The Glazov Gang, an internet political talk show hosted by Jamie Glazov. Schultz married actress Wendy Fulton in 1983, and they have a daughter.
