About
Dustin Lancy Farnum was born on May 27, 1874, in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, the eldest of three brothers. His younger siblings included actor William Farnum, whom he closely resembled, and silent film director Marshall Farnum, who died in 1917. A singer, dancer, and actor, Farnum built his career across both the stage and silent film.
Farnum's Broadway career spanned from 1899 to 1913, during which he appeared in a range of productions. His stage credits included A Romance of Athlone, The Littlest Rebel, The Virginian, Cameo Kirby, The Ranger, and additional productions across that period. Though he took on varied roles throughout his career, he gravitated toward westerns and became a prominent figure in the genre.
In 1914, Farnum transitioned to film, taking his first screen role in Soldiers of Fortune. He subsequently appeared in Cecil B. DeMille's The Squaw Man, further establishing his presence in silent cinema.
In his personal life, Farnum married Mary Cromwell in 1909; the marriage ended in divorce in 1924. He later married Winifred Kingston, and together they had a daughter, radio actress Estelle "Dustine" Runyon, born in 1925 and died in 1983.
Farnum died of kidney failure on July 3, 1929, at Post Graduate Hospital, now known as NYU Langone Health, in Manhattan, at the age of 55. His name carried an unexpected legacy: according to an April 1975 Playboy interview, actor Dustin Hoffman was named after Farnum. Hoffman elaborated on the story in a January 16, 2013, appearance on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, explaining that his mother chose the name from a magazine another patient in her hospital room was reading, which featured Farnum on its cover.
