About

Dudley Digges, born John Dudley Digges on June 9, 1879, in Ranelagh, Dublin, Ireland, was a stage actor, director, producer, and film actor whose career spanned more than four decades in the United States. He died on October 24, 1947, of a stroke at his Manhattan apartment at 1 West 64th Street, just two months after the death of his wife.

Digges received his early theatrical training in Ireland after becoming acquainted with directors William and Frank Fay. He joined W. G. Fay's Irish National Dramatic Company alongside Máire Nic Shiubhlaigh, James H. Cousins, Fred Ryan, and Maire Quinn, who would later become his wife. The company's first production, presented on April 2, 1902, consisted of Cathleen Ni Houlihan, featuring Maud Gonne in the lead role, and Déirdre. Operating without significant funds, the company converted rooms at 34 Lower Camden Street into a small theatre with assistance from members of Irish-revival societies, though the space eventually proved insufficient for their planned productions. They made use of the Coffee Palace in Westmoreland Street for rehearsals and the Molesworth Hall for additional productions. In 1903, the playwrights, actors, and staff involved in these productions went on to establish the Irish National Theatre Society, which founded the Abbey Theatre.

Digges traveled to the United States with a group of fellow actors in 1904 and built a successful career as both a performer and producer. He served as stage manager for Charles Frohman and George Arliss and by the 1920s had established himself as a notable Broadway presence. Among his most recognized stage roles was Ficsur in the original 1921 Broadway production of Ferenc Molnár's Liliom, a play later adapted into the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. He also served as artistic director of a company that included Helen Hayes and Edward G. Robinson. In 1924, he co-founded the Maverick Theater in Woodstock, New York, with the assistance of Hervey White, who had previously established the Maverick Arts Colony. His Broadway appearances, which ran from 1906 to 1946, included starring roles in On Borrowed Time and The Masque of Kings, as well as appearances in Fool for Love, Candida, and the comedy Listen, Professor. He also played the role of the Heavenly Examiner in the original Broadway production of Sutton Vane's Outward Bound and worked additionally as a director on Broadway.

Beginning in 1929, Digges extended his work into film, ultimately appearing in more than 50 pictures over nearly two decades. He portrayed Casper Gutman in the original pre-Code 1931 adaptation of The Maltese Falcon, the same character later played by Sydney Greenstreet in the 1941 version. In The Invisible Man (1933), he played the Chief Detective pursuing the title character, in a film that also featured Claude Rains. He reprised his stage role of the Heavenly Examiner in the 1930 screen adaptation of Outward Bound.

Digges married Irish actress Maire Quinn on August 27, 1907, in New York City, and the two remained together until Quinn's death in August 1947. Following a requiem mass at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church on October 28, 1947, Digges was buried beside Quinn at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York. He was survived by three siblings living in Ireland: a sister, Mrs. Mai Gannen, and two brothers, James and Ernst.
