About
Dorothy Drew was an American performer whose career spanned vaudeville and Broadway across several decades. Active in both theatrical and variety entertainment, she demonstrated range as a singer, dancer, and comedic actress throughout her professional life.
Drew's earliest documented performances date to the mid-1890s. In January 1895, she appeared at the New Manhattan Athletic Club on Ladies Day, where she both danced and sang. By July 1896, she was billed specifically as a dancer during an engagement at the Casino Roof Garden.
Her vaudeville work continued into the early 1900s. In November 1900, Drew was featured in a comedic production called The Young Plumber at Poli's Vaudeville in New Haven, Connecticut. Around that same time, rumors circulated that she had married the boxer James J. Jeffries. Jeffries publicly denied having proposed to Drew on December 2, 1900.
Drew subsequently built a presence on Broadway, with a credited appearance in 1921 and a role in the revue The Greenwich Village Follies in 1923. A photograph of Drew taken by J. U. Stead is held in the collection of the New York Public Library.
