About
Dorothy Dare, born Dorothy Herskind on August 6, 1911, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American actress and singer whose career spanned Broadway, film, and recorded musical performance. She died on October 4, 1981, in Newport Beach, California, and was buried at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona del Mar, California.
Dare's connection to performance began early. She first appeared on stage at age seven and regularly sang in church during her childhood years. Her stage career brought her to Broadway between 1931 and 1934, where she appeared in five productions. These included the musicals America's Sweetheart and The Only Girl, the revue Strike Me Pink, and the productions Here Comes the Bride and Manhattan Varieties.
Alongside her stage work, Dare appeared in Vitaphone shorts before signing a contract with Warner Bros. Studios by 1934. Her feature film debut came that same year in Very Close Veins. Throughout the 1930s she appeared in a number of films, among them Gold Diggers of 1935, Front Page Woman (1935), High Hat (1937), and Clothes and the Woman (1937). Her musical work during this period included performing songs such as "Red Headed and Blue" and "Yoo Hoo Hoo."
Her film activity diminished in the late 1930s and into the early 1940s. She made her final film appearance in 1942, playing Peggy in The Yanks Are Coming, and in 1944 performed her last musical number in Musical Movieland. Following her departure from the film industry, Dare relocated to Orange County, California, and rarely discussed her Hollywood career publicly.
