About
A former stage actress, Carter studied drama at Spelman College before training with Stella Adler in New York. She opened on Broadway in 1945 in Lillian Smith's adaptation of her own novel Strange Fruit, an interracial love story. Carter was also a member of the American Negro Theater, under the direction of Abe Hill. She later pursued careers as an educator and children's book author.
