About
Dorothy Boyd was an English actress born on April 14, 1907, in Sanderstead, Surrey, England. She went on to build a career spanning both film and stage, and she died in England in 1996.
Boyd came to the screen without prior stage experience, making her earliest appearances in three short films produced using the Phonofilm sound-on-film process: Knee Deep in Daisies (1926), The Sentence of Death (1927), and The Burglar and the Girl (1928). Her work in those productions caught the attention of a director who brought her to the notice of Alfred Hitchcock, and Hitchcock subsequently cast her in his feature film Easy Virtue (1928). Over the course of her screen career, Boyd appeared in more than thirty films between 1926 and 1940.
Alongside her film work, Boyd made an appearance on Broadway in 1929, performing in the musical Pansy. That credit placed her among the relatively small number of performers who worked across both the British film industry and the American stage during that era.
