About
Dorothy Bernard, born Nora Dorothy Bernard on June 25, 1890, in Port Elizabeth, British Cape Colony — now part of South Africa — was an American actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television. Her birth date, though listed as July 25, 1890 in numerous biographies, is recorded as June 25, 1890 on both her death certificate and U.S. passport. She appeared in nearly 90 films between 1908 and 1956 and maintained an active Broadway presence from 1921 to 1948.
Bernard came from a theatrical family. Her father, William H. Bernard, was a stock company manager and actor whom Bernard described as "English and partly Jewish," and her mother, Roy Elizabeth Ayrd, was born in Sligo, Ireland, of Scotch-Irish background. Her father was originally from Auckland, New Zealand. Her grandfather, Joseph Bernard Simmons, served as drama critic for The Times of London. Her parents were in Port Elizabeth as part of a visiting stock theater company at the time of her birth. Bernard grew up largely in Portland, Oregon, where her father managed a stock company, and she later recalled spending portions of her early childhood in Australia and New Zealand before being educated in San Francisco and Los Angeles. She graduated from the Marlborough School in Los Angeles.
Her stage work began in childhood, when she performed in productions at the Baker Theater Company in Portland under the name Dot Bernard. Her stepmother, actress Nan Ramsey, also appeared in several of those productions. Bernard went on to work with stock theater companies in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, and Detroit, and she performed in vaudeville as well. In 1905, her family relocated to Los Angeles, where her father took a position managing the Belasco Theater. She first worked in films in 1911 with D. W. Griffith and the Biograph Company.
Bernard's Broadway career included five productions across nearly three decades. She appeared in Personality in 1921, followed by The Ragged Edge in 1935 and Love in My Fashion in 1937. She joined the cast of Life With Father in 1939 and returned to Broadway in 1948 with Life With Mother. On television, she portrayed Margaret, an Irish cook and housekeeper, in Life With Father, reprising a role she had originated on stage.
In her personal life, Bernard married actor A. H. Van Buren on July 5, 1909, in Washington, D.C. The couple had a daughter, Marjorie "Midge" Van Buren, born in Jamaica, New York. Bernard died of a heart attack at her Hollywood home on December 15, 1955, at the age of 65. Her body was cremated, and her ashes were placed at the Chapel of the Pines Crematory in Los Angeles.
