About
Dorothy Appleby (January 6, 1906 – August 9, 1990) was an American actress who worked in both Broadway theater and film. Born in 1906, she died on August 9, 1990, in Hicksville, New York, at the age of 84.
Appleby began her performing career in New York City, where she gained early experience as an understudy and chorus member in stage productions. A newspaper account noted that she had arrived in New York after winning a beauty contest in Maine. Her Broadway career spanned from 1924 to 1933, during which she appeared in several productions. She starred in the play Young Sinners and took roles in the musical Princess April, the play Springtime for Henry, and the play Square Crooks.
Her screen career began in 1931 and extended through 1943, encompassing more than 50 films. She worked predominantly in supporting roles, appearing most frequently in short subjects and low-budget features. She became a regular presence in Columbia Pictures' two-reel comedies, where she worked alongside comics including Andy Clyde, El Brendel, and Hugh Herbert. Among her most frequent collaborations were appearances with The Three Stooges in films such as Loco Boy Makes Good, So Long Mr. Chumps, and In the Sweet Pie and Pie. In the 1940 Stooges comedy Cookoo Cavaliers, she played a Mexican brunette named Rosita, whose face becomes encased in a concrete facial treatment applied by the Stooges. She also held an uncredited part in John Ford's Stagecoach and appeared in a small role in the 1941 Jane Withers feature Small Town Deb.
In October 1925, newspapers reported that Appleby had married Teddy Hayes, an athletic trainer, though she subsequently denied the report. On May 11, 1932, she was granted a divorce from actor Morgan H. Galloway.
