About
Dorothie Littlefield was an American ballet dancer and Broadway performer born on September 16, 1912, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She came from a family deeply rooted in dance: her mother was dancer Caroline Littlefield (c. 1882–1957), and her sister was dancer Catherine Littlefield (1904–1951). Dorothie received her early dance training from her mother.
During the 1930s, Littlefield taught in the children's division of the newly established School of American Ballet. She subsequently departed that position to join her mother and sister in the Littlefield Ballet, based in Philadelphia. In 1937, she danced the lead role in Barn Dance.
Littlefield's stage career extended to Broadway, where she performed between 1943 and 1944. Her Broadway credits include Song of Norway and the musical The Vagabond King. In addition to her theatrical work, she also performed in ice shows.
Dorothie and Catherine Littlefield were the subjects of a chapter in the 1998 book Dancing Female, edited by Sharon E. Friedler and Susan B. Glazer.
Littlefield died on August 24, 1953, in Evanston, Illinois, at the age of 40.
