About
Doris Mary Stocker, later known as Lady Segrave, was a British actress and singer born in Bombay, India, in 1886. She was the second of three children born to George Stocker (1857–1929), an engineer, and Mary Dunn née Johnston (1862–1946). While her father continued working in India, her mother brought the children to England, where the family lived in London from at least 1891 to 1911. Her older sister Blanche Stocker pursued a parallel career as a stage actress and singer.
Stocker launched her performing career as a chorus girl under the management of George Edwardes at the Gaiety Theatre in London. She progressed to named roles in West End productions, playing Grace Hufnagle in Captain Kidd at Wyndham's Theatre in 1904 and Angy Loftus in The Cingalee at Daly's Theatre the same year. Later West End credits included Pepzi in A Waltz Dream at Daly's in 1911, Lady Diana Camden in Theodore & Co at the Gaiety in 1912, and Gipsy Dancer in Gipsy Love at Daly's also in 1912.
In 1914, Stocker made her Broadway appearance in the musical To-Night's the Night at the Shubert Theatre in New York, where she played the Honorable Baby Vereker. She reprised the role the following year when the production transferred to the Gaiety Theatre in London in 1915.
Also in 1915, Stocker traveled to Sarawak, Malaysia, accompanying Sylvia Brett and Charles Vyner Brooke aboard a Japanese steamer to visit Charles Brooke, the Rajah of Sarawak. On 4 October 1917, at Marylebone, London, she married Sir Henry O'Neal De Hane Segrave (1896–1930), who was at that time serving as a Captain in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and the Royal Flying Corps. Following her marriage, Stocker retired from the stage. She died in Kensington, London, on 16 December 1968, leaving an estate valued at £76,135.
