Doris May, born Helen Garrett on October 15, 1902, in Seattle, Washington, was an American actress whose career spanned both silent film and the Broadway stage. She died on May 12, 1984.
May established herself in silent cinema beginning in 1917, accumulating appearances in 29 films through 1927. Her screen work encompassed westerns, comedies, and melodramas, with May typically cast in leading lady roles. Among her film credits are His Mother's Boy (1917), The Hired Man (1918), 23 1/2 Hours' Leave (1919), Peck's Bad Boy (1921), The Gunfighter (1923), and The Deadwood Coach (1924). In 1921 she married actor and producer Wallace MacDonald; the marriage lasted until MacDonald's death in 1978.
Alongside her film career, May pursued work on the Broadway stage, appearing in productions between 1926 and 1933. Her Broadway credits include the musicals The Wild Rose, Show Girl, Smiles, and Of Thee I Sing. The period of her stage work overlapped with the final years of her screen career, as her last known film appearance, Faithful Wives, was released in 1926, the same year her Broadway activity began.
