About
Doris Deane, born Doris Anita Dibble on January 20, 1901, in Wisconsin, was an actress whose career spanned film and stage. She died on March 24, 1974, in Hollywood.
Deane built her screen career appearing in films alongside comedian Al St. John, taking on supporting roles in comedy productions. Her work in silent and early cinema is documented in the documentary film 4 Clowns, which preserves her contributions to the era.
In 1944, Deane made her Broadway appearance in the play The Day Will Come, extending her performing career to the stage.
Beyond her professional work, Deane was publicly known for her marriage to film director Roscoe Arbuckle. The two had been acquainted prior to the union, having spent time together as guests of writer Gouverneur Morris. They wed on May 16, 1925, shortly after Arbuckle's divorce from Minta Durfee, a period that also followed the widely publicized accusations against Arbuckle in connection with the death of Virginia Rappe. The couple planned a honeymoon in New York following the ceremony. The marriage ultimately ended in divorce, and in 1929 Deane filed suit seeking alimony.
