About

Dora Mavor Moore was a Broadway performer and a foundational figure in the development of Canadian professional theatre. She appeared on Broadway in 1914 in the production Poor Little Thing.

Beyond her performing career, Moore's contributions to Canadian theatre were recognized posthumously through the establishment of a major awards program in her name. The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts founded the Dora Mavor Moore Awards on December 13, 1978, with the inaugural ceremony held in 1980. The awards, commonly referred to as the Dora Awards or the Doras, are presented annually to honor theatre, dance, and opera productions in Toronto. Each recipient receives a bronze statue created from an original work by sculptor John Romano.

The awards program encompasses several major divisions, including General Theatre, Musical Theatre, Independent Theatre, Dance, Opera, Theatre for Young Audiences, and Touring. Within each division, honors are given across categories such as production, direction, performance, and design. In 2019, the awards discontinued gender-based performance categories, replacing them with gender-neutral Outstanding Performance designations.

Several ancillary awards are also administered by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts in connection with the Dora Awards. These include the Pauline McGibbon Award, established in 1981 to support emerging Ontario theatre artists; the Barbara Hamilton Award, a $1,000 prize established in 1996 for demonstrated excellence in the performing arts; the George Luscombe Award, first presented in 1999 to recognize mentorship in theatre; and the Silver Ticket Award, which has been presented since 1980 to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Toronto stage and to Canadian theatre more broadly.
