About
Donald Randolph (January 5, 1906 – March 16, 1993) was a film, television, and radio actor born in Cape Town, South Africa. Over the course of his career he appeared in more than thirty films, dozens of radio dramas, and numerous television programs, while also maintaining a presence on the Broadway stage from 1932 to 1946.
Randolph made his Broadway debut in Fatal Alibi in 1932, the same year he appeared in Strange Gods. His subsequent stage work included Crime Marches on (1935), King Richard II (1936), Hamlet (1939), a second production of King Richard II (1939), and Lady in the Dark (1940). He continued performing on Broadway into the early 1940s with The Sun Field (1942), Yours, A. Lincoln (1942), The Naked Genius (1943), and It's You I Want, closing out his Broadway career with I Like It Here in 1945.
Beyond the stage, Randolph built a substantial screen career. His film appearances included The Desert Hawk (1950) and The Deadly Mantis (1957), in which he portrayed General Mark Ford. He later took a supporting role in Alfred Hitchcock's Topaz (1969), appearing in the credits as Don Randolph. His voice work brought him to radio throughout the 1940s and 1950s, where he performed in numerous dramatic broadcasts.
On television, Randolph appeared in two episodes of Perry Mason: in the 1958 episode "The Case of the Cautious Coquette" he played the murderer Stephen Argyle, and in the 1959 episode "The Case of the Spanish Cross" he portrayed murder victim Curtis Runyan. He also appeared in the Have Gun – Will Travel episode "The Monster" (Season 2, Episode 19, first aired January 14, 1960) as Don Francisco, and in the 1968 Big Valley episode "Miranda" as Don Ramon Monteja.
Randolph died of pneumonia in Los Angeles on March 16, 1993, at the age of 87. A portion of his personal papers is preserved at the UCLA Library Special Collections.
