About
Donald Ellis Pickering (15 November 1933 – 19 December 2009) was an English actor born in Newcastle upon Tyne, the son of John Joseph Pickering and Edith, née Ellis. He received his formal training at the Old Vic Theatre School in London, the institution founded by Michel Saint-Denis.
Pickering's Broadway career spanned from 1963 to 1970, during which he appeared in The School for Scandal and starred in Conduct Unbecoming. His performance in Conduct Unbecoming earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play in 1971.
Beyond the stage, Pickering built an extensive career in British television. He appeared three times in Doctor Who across different decades, taking roles in The Keys of Marinus (1964), The Faceless Ones (1967), and Time and the Rani (1987). In the 26-part BBC adaptation The Pallisers, he portrayed the character Dolly Longstaffe. He also took on the role of Dr. Watson in the series Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, which ran from 1979 to 1980. His additional television credits included Yes, Prime Minister, The House of Eliott, The Brittas Empire, Executive Stress, and The Professionals.
