About
Donald Oenslager (March 7, 1902 – June 11, 1975) was an American scenic designer born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He attended Harvard University, completing his studies there in 1923, and developed an interest in design during a subsequent period of study in Europe.
Before establishing himself as a designer, Oenslager worked as an actor in the 1920s, appearing at venues including the Greenwich Village Theatre and the Harrisburg Playhouse. His Broadway acting credits include the 1924 play Desire Under the Elms. His first credit as a designer came in 1925 with the ballet Sooner or Later, and he went on to design sets and lighting for more than 140 Broadway productions between 1925 and 1975.
Oenslager received a Tony Award nomination for his scenic design work on the play Major Barbara, and two years later, in 1959, he won the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design for his contributions to Leonard Spigelgass's play A Majority of One.
Beyond his work in professional theater, Oenslager taught scenic design at the Yale School of Drama for many years. Yale continues to award an annual scholarship for stage design in his name, and among the students he trained was designer John Lee Beatty.
His papers are held by the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. A number of his scenic design sketches are part of the permanent collection at the Museum of the City of New York, which mounted an exhibition of his designs in 2008. Additional archival materials, including the Donald Oenslager Papers, are held at Yale University Library.
