About
Donald Brian (February 17, 1877 – December 22, 1948) was a Canadian actor, dancer, and tenor born in St. John's, Newfoundland. His Broadway career spanned from 1901 to 1939, during which he accumulated leading roles in more than twenty musicals and operettas.
Before reaching the stage, Brian worked in a Boston machine shop and began his performing life at age sixteen, singing with a vocal quartet. He eventually joined a theatrical troupe in New York City, where he quickly established himself as a leading man. His early Broadway appearances included Florodora in 1902 and Little Johnny Jones in 1904, followed by Forty-five Minutes from Broadway in 1906. His most celebrated stage achievement came in 1907, when he starred in the operetta The Merry Widow, a production that became a significant hit. He continued building his Broadway résumé with The Dollar Princess in 1909, The Siren in 1911, The Marriage Market in 1913, and The Girl from Utah in 1914.
Brian also pursued a film career alongside his stage work. In 1915 he signed with producer Jesse L. Lasky and appeared in The Voice in the Fog that same year, followed by The Smugglers in 1916. He made no further film appearances until the sound era, when he was featured in an excerpt from Peggy O'Hooligan in 1925, produced using the DeForest Phonofilm sound-on-film process.
His later Broadway credits included Sybil in 1916, The Girl Behind the Gun in 1918, Buddies in 1919, The Chocolate Soldier in 1921, Up She Goes in 1922, Peggy O'Hooligan in 1925, No No Nanette in 1926, and The Merry Widow Burlesque, with his final Broadway appearance coming in Very Warm for May in 1939.
Beyond performing, Brian served as president of the Catholic Actors Guild of America. He was married twice, first to Florence Meagher Gleason Pope in 1910, and later to stage actress Virginia O'Brien, born 1896, with whom he had one daughter, Denise. Brian died on December 22, 1948, in Great Neck, New York, at the age of 73.
