About
Domini Blythe (August 28, 1947 – December 15, 2010) was a British-born Canadian actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television across multiple decades. Born in Upton-by-Chester in Cheshire, England, she trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London before embarking on a professional career that would take her from the West End to Broadway and across Canada.
Blythe made her London stage debut in 1970 in Oh, Calcutta! and went on to work with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1972, she appeared as Anna Müller in the Hammer film Vampire Circus, and that same year she relocated to Canada, eventually settling in Stratford, Ontario. There she built a substantial presence at the Stratford Festival, taking on many leading roles over the course of her career. Among her work at Stratford was a solo show about abolitionist Fanny Kemble, which she co-created with director Peter Hinton-Davis. She also performed for several years at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
In 2004, Blythe appeared on Broadway in King Lear, adding an international stage credit to her already extensive theatrical résumé. Her screen work included the television series Search for Tomorrow and Mount Royal, as well as the television production External Affairs. Her film credits encompassed The Wars, Savage Messiah, and Montreal Stories.
Film writer-director Jean Beaudin was identified by some sources as her husband, while The Independent described him as her partner of more than twenty years. Blythe died of cancer in Montreal on December 15, 2010, at the age of 63.
