About
Dion Graham is an American actor and audiobook narrator who grew up in Cincinnati and is based in New York City. His career spans stage, screen, and audio performance, with work extending from the early 1990s through the present day.
Graham's on-screen acting career began in 1992 with a role in Malcolm X. During the 1990s he continued to build his résumé through television appearances, including Law & Order, while also performing on- and off-Broadway. His Broadway career ran from 1999 to 2014 and included the plays Machinal and Not About Nightingales. He also performed in a Tennessee Williams production at the Royal National Theatre. His television work has continued across multiple decades, with roles in The Wire, The Good Wife, and Madam Secretary.
Graham's path into audiobook narration began when a roommate asked him to record James Joyce's "The Dead" for a road trip. Listening to the recording months later, Graham found it compelling and recalled having enjoyed the process of making it. Shortly afterward, while performing at the Royal National Theatre, an acquaintance encouraged him to pursue audiobook work professionally. His first narrated audiobook was published in 2000.
Since then, Graham has narrated at least 280 audiobooks as of April 2024. His catalog includes classic works by African American writers such as Langston Hughes's The Weary Blues, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from Birmingham Jail, James Baldwin's Going to Meet the Man, and Chester Himes's The Big Gold Dream. He has also narrated more recent titles, among them What Strange Paradise by Omar El Akkad, a novel about a young Syrian refugee written by the Egyptian-Canadian author.
Graham has received extensive recognition for his narration work. AudioFile magazine has named him a Golden Voice Narrator, and Audible has inducted him into its Narrator Hall of Fame. He has been named Publishers Weekly's Narrator of the Year and received a Voice of Choice award from Booklist in 2012. His total award count includes 11 Audie Awards, 71 Earphone Awards, 3 Listen-Up Awards, and 1 Odyssey Award.
