About
Diana Nicole DeGarmo was born on June 16, 1987, in Birmingham, Alabama, and was raised primarily in Snellville, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. She began performing at a young age, singing at the 1997 Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards and appearing in Atlanta-based stage productions of Annie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. At age ten she appeared in bumper segments as part of the Cartoon Gang on Cartoon Network, and as a third grader she served as a Coca-Cola Kid during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. She sang at Opryland USA during the 1997 Christmas season and, in 2002, was named Miss Georgia Teen and reached the finals of the NBC talent search program America's Most Talented Kid.
DeGarmo rose to national prominence in 2004 as the runner-up of the third season of American Idol, finishing second to winner Fantasia Barrino at the age of sixteen. Shortly after the finale, she signed with RCA Records and released the single "Dreams" on June 29, 2004, which reached number two in Canada and number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100. The single also featured her rendition of "I Believe" and a cover of Melissa Manchester's "Don't Cry Out Loud." Her debut album, Blue Skies, followed on December 7, 2004, debuting at number fifty-two on the Billboard 200 with opening-week sales of 47,000 copies. The album included songs written by Kara DioGuardi, Desmond Child, Adam Shankman, and Andreas Carlsson, among others. A second single, "Emotional," was released to radio in November 2004, peaking at number fifty-four on the Mediabase Pop Chart. She also recorded "Reaching for Heaven," written by Desmond Child, for the soundtrack of the Disney film Ice Princess. In June 2005, DeGarmo and RCA parted ways. That September, she received the Horizon Award at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards. In February 2009, she self-released a four-song acoustic country EP, Unplugged in Nashville, and in May 2012 released a second EP, Live to Love, which included "Good Goodbye," a song she wrote for her character on The Young and the Restless. Her second full-length album, Gemini, was released on August 2, 2019, with a release concert at Sony Hall. A live-streamed concert of Gemini in the summer of 2020 earned her the 2020 BroadwayWorld Award for Best Streamed Concert.
DeGarmo made her major stage debut as Maria in an American Musical Theatre of San Jose production of West Side Story in November 2005. She transitioned to Broadway in February 2006, joining the cast of Hairspray as Penny Pingleton, taking over the role from Tracy Miller for a four-month run. She returned to Hairspray for a second Broadway engagement from September 2006 to February 2007, and later reprised the role of Penny Pingleton in the Hollywood Bowl production of Hairspray in August 2011. In April 2007, she made her Carnegie Hall debut at a tribute to Neil Sedaka. Also in 2006, she performed the lead role of Brooklyn in the national tour of Brooklyn: The Musical alongside Melba Moore.
In July 2009, DeGarmo starred as the narrator in the Oklahoma Lyric Theatre production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat alongside fellow Idol alumnus Anthony Federov. That August, she debuted off-Broadway at New World Stages as Sarah in The Toxic Avenger, remaining with the production until it closed on January 3, 2010. In May 2009, she also appeared in the musical revue Back to Bacharach and David, a two-week engagement in Los Angeles created and produced by Kathy Najimy, featuring the songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
DeGarmo returned to Broadway in March 2010, succeeding original cast member Caissie Levy in the role of Sheila in Hair, where she met her future husband, fifth-season American Idol finalist Ace Young. She remained with the production until it closed on June 27, 2010. Beginning September 21, 2010, she played Doralee Rhodes in the national tour of 9 to 5, which launched in Nashville, concluding her run at the July 2011 Minneapolis tour stop. From March 4, 2014, to April 2015, she played the Narrator in the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Beyond her Broadway and touring work, DeGarmo played Lucy in the 2016 to 2017 world tour of Jekyll and Hyde, starred as Dorothy in Studio Tenn's production of The Wizard of Oz at the Schermerhorn Symphony Theater in Nashville in June 2015, played the Witch in a regional production of Into the Woods in 2023, and returned to the regional stage as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors in 2024. She also participated in readings for several new musicals over the years, including a 2009 concert of Liberty: A New Musical at the New York Musical Theatre Festival and multiple industry readings of Jawbreaker in 2011 and 2013. On the television side, DeGarmo made her acting debut in a six-month arc as Angelina Veneziano on The Young and the Restless.
