About
Despoina Diamantidou, known professionally as Despo, was a Greek actress born on July 13, 1916, in Piraeus, Greece. She died on February 18, 2004. Over the course of her screen career, she appeared in more than seventy films between 1949 and 2003.
Despo built a significant portion of her film work alongside Melina Mercouri, and director Jules Dassin helmed four of her screen appearances. Among her most recognized film roles was that of the ringleader of the Piraeus prostitutes in the 1960 film Never on Sunday. Fifteen years later, she appeared opposite Woody Allen, playing his Russian mother in the 1975 comedy Love and Death.
Her work extended to American television, where she played Tatiana in Ivan the Terrible, a summer replacement sitcom starring Lou Jacobi and produced by Alan King. The series aired on ABC from August 21 to September 18, 1976.
Despo also maintained a Broadway career spanning from 1966 to 1973. Her stage credits included Illya Darling, Cabaret, and A Little Night Music.
