About
Desmond Thomas Devenish is a British-American actor, writer, director, and producer. He was born in Manhattan, New York City, to Louise Devenish (née Mellion), an appraiser and professor of fine and decorative arts, and Thomas Devenish, a New York dealer of fine English furniture who was born in England to parents who worked in vaudeville.
Devenish's education spanned several institutions, including Saint David's School and Riverdale Country School in New York City, followed by John F. Kennedy High School. He went on to study at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and Marymount Manhattan College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts. He later attended The Los Angeles Film School.
His Broadway career includes a 1995 appearance in On the Waterfront, staged at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The production featured Ron Eldard, Penelope Ann Miller, David Morse, and James Gandolfini. In 2025, Devenish wrote, directed, and performed in The Forum, a solo theatre piece that premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and explored themes of belief, betrayal, and conviction.
While still in high school, Devenish was cast in the lead role of Delinquent, directed by Peter Hall. He also starred in Exit 8A, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival and the LA Film Festival. His short film Split, produced as his thesis at The Los Angeles Film School, was acquired by Shorts International, and a subsequent short, Closure, won Best Short at the San Pedro International Film Festival. His feature directorial debut, Misfortune, a thriller shot in Tucson, Arizona, received the Yellow Rose at the Jaipur International Film Festival, won Best Feature at the Black Hills Film Festival, and earned a Grand Jury Award nomination at Dances With Films. The film received a theatrical release across a dozen U.S. markets and is distributed by Entertainment One. His second feature, Eddie & Sunny, stars Gabriel Luna and Joanna Vanderham and was filmed in Ostia, Italy, and Guatemala, with Silvio Muraglia and Andrea Iervolino among its producers.
In television, Devenish directed Stretch It Out!, a comedy special written and performed by Shawn Pelofsky, which is distributed by Comedy Dynamics.
