About
Dennis Neilson-Terry (21 October 1895 – 14 July 1932) was a British actor, theatre manager, and producer born in London into the Terry family of actors. His father was the actor Fred Terry and his mother the actress Julia Neilson; his older sister was the actress Phyllis Neilson-Terry, and his aunt was the celebrated Ellen Terry. He married the actress Mary Glynne, and the couple had a daughter, the actress Hazel Terry. Neilson-Terry also appeared in a number of films between 1917 and 1932.
Educated at Charterhouse School, Neilson-Terry made his stage debut at Drury Lane on 12 June 1906, playing a page in Much Ado About Nothing as part of Ellen Terry's Jubilee celebrations. His first regular stage appearances came under the name Derrick Dennis at the New Theatre in May 1911, when he played Silvius in As You Like It. He subsequently performed Armand St Just in The Scarlet Pimpernel in his parents' company before broadening his Shakespearean range during a year's tour with F. R. Benson's company, taking on roles including Lorenzo in The Merchant of Venice, Rosencrantz in Hamlet, Paris in Romeo and Juliet, Octavius Caesar in Antony and Cleopatra, Demetrius in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Malcolm in Macbeth.
In 1912, under Herbert Beerbohm Tree's management, Neilson-Terry played Sebastian in Twelfth Night opposite his sister in the role of Viola. That same year, for Lillah McCarthy and Harley Granville-Barker, he played Florizel in The Winter's Tale and again took the role of Sebastian in Twelfth Night. The Times praised his playing in The Winter's Tale as "dainty" and noted that he was "evidently gifted with a full measure of the family talent." His first starring role came in 1913 with Romeo and Juliet, followed by Louis Dubedat in The Doctor's Dilemma that same year and Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1914, a performance The Times credited with dominating the entire production.
During the First World War, Neilson-Terry served in the Royal West Surrey Regiment and was demobilised in 1917, at which point he resumed his theatrical career. Where he had previously been regarded as a rising Shakespearean, his postwar work shifted toward lighter, more commercially oriented productions, following a path his father had taken before him. One postwar performance that drew particular critical attention was his portrayal of a frightened man in a haunted room in Ned Lathom's play Fear, which The Manchester Guardian described as signaling that Neilson-Terry was a developing actor with his best work still ahead of him.
Neilson-Terry brought his work to Broadway in 1925, appearing in two plays: The Offense and The Crooked Friday. These New York appearances were among the successful engagements he and his wife made together in the city. The couple also toured South Africa together, and it was following one such tour that Neilson-Terry contracted pneumonia. He died in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia, on 14 July 1932, at the age of 36. His body was returned to England, his funeral service was held at St Paul's, Covent Garden, and he was buried in Hampstead Cemetery.
