About
Denise Gough is an Irish actress born on 28 February 1980 in Wexford and raised in Ennis, County Clare. The seventh of eleven siblings, she grew up in a family where her father worked as an electrician and in fisheries management and her mother was a marriage counsellor. Her younger sister Kelly Gough is also an actress. Gough trained as a soprano in her early years and left Ireland for London at the age of 15. She experienced homelessness after her arrival and later disclosed that she had been groomed from the age of 13 and raped twice at 14 by a man in his twenties, turning to alcohol and drugs in response to those experiences. At 18 she received a grant to attend the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts in Wandsworth, graduating from the program in 2003.
Gough's stage career gained significant recognition in 2012, when she received a nomination for the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for her work in Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms at the Lyric Hammersmith and Nancy Harris's Our New Girl at the Bush Theatre. In January 2014 she played Julia in The Duchess of Malfi, the inaugural production at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in London. Her performance as a recovering substance user in Duncan Macmillan's People, Places and Things at the National Theatre in September 2015, directed by Jeremy Herrin, brought her widespread attention. When the production transferred to the Wyndham's Theatre in March 2016, Gough won the Olivier Award for Best Actress.
She returned to the National Theatre in April 2017 to play Harper in Marianne Elliot's revival of Tony Kushner's Angels in America, earning the 2018 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. In February 2018, Gough reprised the role of Harper in the Broadway transfer of that production, appearing in both Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Angels in America: Perestroika. Her Broadway debut earned her two Theatre World Awards in 2018, and she also received a Tony Award nomination for the role.
Beyond the stage, Gough has built a substantial screen career. Her television work includes the BBC Two crime drama Paula in 2017, the ITV miniseries Too Close in 2021, and the Disney+ series Andor, which ran from 2022 to 2025. Her film credits include Colette and The Other Lamb, Monday, and Martyrs Lane. She has also received a British Academy Television Award nomination.
