Denis Arndt

Denis Leroy Arndt (February 23, 1939 – March 25, 2025) was an American actor born in Issaquah, Washington, who earned a Tony Award nomination for his Broadway debut late in his career. He is best known for portraying Alex Priest in the play Heisenberg, a role that brought him a 2017 Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play.

Before pursuing acting, Arndt served in the Vietnam War as a United States Army helicopter pilot, receiving both a Purple Heart and a Commendation Medal for his service. Following the war, he spent several years flying helicopters in Alaska before enrolling at the University of Washington, where he completed his degree. His stage career took shape at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon, where he completed 15 seasons, and he was also a charter member of Seattle's Intiman Theatre.

Arndt's path to Broadway came through the Manhattan Theater Club's production of Heisenberg. He joined the production after Kenneth Welsh exited rehearsals, and the show opened on June 3, 2015. The production subsequently transferred to Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, where it opened on October 13, 2016.

Alongside his stage work, Arndt built a substantial television career. He held a regular role on Annie McGuire and recurring roles on both Picket Fences and L.A. Law. His guest appearances spanned multiple series, including The Good Fight, Grey's Anatomy, Supernatural, and Vanished. On film, he appeared in Basic Instinct and How to Make an American Quilt. Arndt died on March 25, 2025, at the age of 86.
