About

Demi Gene Moore, born Demetria Gene Harmon on November 11, 1962, in Roswell, New Mexico, is an American actress whose career has spanned film, television, and the stage. Her biological father, Air Force airman Charles Foster Harmon Sr., left her mother Virginia before Moore's birth, and Moore was subsequently raised by her stepfather, Dan Guynes, a newspaper advertising salesman whose frequent job changes caused the family to relocate repeatedly throughout her childhood. Moore spent portions of her early years in Roswell, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and later West Hollywood, California, where she attended Fairfax High School. She left school in her junior year after moving in with guitarist Tom Dunston in November 1978, taking a job as a receptionist at 20th Century Fox secured through Dunston's mother, an executive assistant to producer Douglas S. Cramer. She subsequently signed with the Elite Modeling Agency and enrolled in acting classes, having been inspired by her neighbor, German actress Nastassja Kinski.

Moore met musician Freddy Moore in August 1979 at the Los Angeles nightclub The Troubadour, and the two married in early 1981, remaining together until 1985. During that period she co-wrote three songs with him and appeared in the music video for It's Not a Rumor, performed by his band the Nu-Kats, and continues to receive royalty checks from that songwriting work. Her professional acting career began with guest appearances on the television series W.E.B. and Kaz, followed by her film debut in the 1981 sports drama Choices. She joined the cast of the ABC soap opera General Hospital that same year, playing investigative reporter Jackie Templeton through 1983. Her early film work also included the 3-D science fiction horror film Parasite (1982), which grossed $7 million on the drive-in circuit.

Following her departure from General Hospital, Moore rose to wider recognition as part of the Brat Pack, appearing in Blame It on Rio (1984), St. Elmo's Fire (1985), and About Last Night... (1986). Her accolades from this period include a Theatre World Award, received in 1987. She married actor Bruce Willis in 1987, and the two remained together until 2000, having three daughters together. Moore achieved major box office prominence with her portrayal of a grieving girlfriend in the 1990 romance film Ghost, and sustained that momentum through A Few Good Men (1992), Indecent Proposal (1993), and Disclosure (1994). By 1995 she had become the world's highest-paid actress, and received a then-unprecedented $12.5 million to star in Striptease (1996). Her commercial output slowed following the underperformance of The Scarlet Letter (1995), The Juror (1996), and G.I. Jane (1997).

In subsequent years Moore took on supporting roles in films including Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003), Bobby (2006), Mr. Brooks (2007), Margin Call (2011), and Rough Night (2017), as well as television credits in If These Walls Could Talk (1996), Empire (2017–2018), Feud: Capote vs. The Swans (2024), and Landman, which began in 2024. Her third marriage, to actor Ashton Kutcher, lasted from 2005 to 2013. Her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, reached number one on The New York Times Best Seller list. Moore received renewed critical attention for her lead performance in the 2024 body horror film The Substance, which earned her a Golden Globe and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. In 2025, she appeared on Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was named the most beautiful woman in the world by People magazine.

Moore's Broadway involvement includes an appearance in 2009 as well as participation in The 24 Hour Plays in 2004. Her stage work, combined with a film and television career stretching across four decades, reflects the breadth of her presence across multiple performance disciplines.
