About
Delphi Lawrence (23 March 1932 – 11 April 2002) was an English actress born to Barbara Yvonne (née Enever) and Louis Holzman, who had married in 1930. Her father's family was of Hungarian ancestry. Lawrence grew up in Colnbrook and received her early education at Halidon House School in Slough, Berkshire. Before pursuing acting, she trained as a concert pianist. She subsequently enrolled at RADA, completing her studies there in 1949.
Lawrence made her film debut in 1952 and spent the following decade building a presence in British cinema, advancing to lead roles, though her film work during this period was concentrated largely in "B" productions. Her television work in the early 1960s included a guest appearance in episode 11 of The Saint, portraying Cora in "The Man Who Was Lucky" in 1962, and a role as the Countess in episode six of the historical adventure series Sir Francis Drake, in the episode titled "The English Dragon," in 1961.
In 1966, Lawrence relocated to the United States and continued working in American film and television. Her credits from this period include Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, in which she played Julietta in "Escape from Venice"; The Wild Wild West, where she portrayed Lucretia Posey in "The Night of the Poisonous Posey"; and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., in which she appeared as Olivia Willis in "The J for Judas Affair." As the decade closed, her screen roles diminished in both frequency and prominence, and she retired from performing in 1973.
Lawrence returned to the stage in 1975 with a Broadway appearance in The Constant Wife, playing the sister of Ingrid Bergman's character. She went on to appear in touring productions of Mame in the role of Vera Charles, performing opposite Susan Hayward, Celeste Holm, Ann Sothern, and Juliet Prowse at various points. The final such production, in 1990, paired her with Prowse. Her Broadway career also included a credit in Equus. Lawrence died on 11 April 2002 at the age of 70.
