About
Sara Delma Byron was born on July 31, 1913, in Weakley County, Tennessee, and died on May 29, 2006. An American dancer and actress, she worked under several professional names throughout her career, including Sally Bynum, Sally Bynam, and Brook Byron.
Byron grew up in Akron, Ohio, where she attended Garfield High School. She was the daughter of Sam and Minnie Pearl Harris Bynum. After completing one year at Murray College, she left to join a touring dance troupe called The Band Box Revue. She subsequently pursued modeling, and her appearances on magazine covers drew interest from Hollywood. In 1936, 20th Century Fox offered her a stock contract, providing her an entry into film work.
Her Broadway career spanned from 1933 to 1948. Performing as Sally Bynum, she appeared in Roberta in 1933 and Life Begins at 8:40 in 1934. Under the name Delma Byron, she went on to appear in Up in Central Park in 1945 and The Leading Lady in 1948. Using the name Brook Byron, she portrayed Sally Cato MacDougall in Auntie Mame.
Beyond the stage, Byron worked in radio, playing the character Diane Pers on the soap opera Kate Hopkins, Angel of Mercy. Her television credits included appearances on The Untouchables, Richard Diamond Private Detective, and M Squad, among others.
