About

Deirdre O'Connell is an American actress whose career spans stage, film, and television. She was born the eldest of three children to Anne Ludlum, a playwright and actress, and Thomas E. O'Connell, the founding president of Berkshire Community College. O'Connell grew up in Massachusetts, attended Taconic High School, and later enrolled at Antioch College in Ohio, though she left before completing her degree.

O'Connell launched her professional career at Stage One, an experimental theatre housed within the Boston Center for the Arts. Her Broadway debut came in 1986 with the revival of The Front Page, and she returned to Broadway in Magic/Bird before ultimately starring in Dana H., which ran in 2021. Her off-Broadway work during this period also drew significant recognition: her performance in Love and Anger earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play in 1991. Her stage work in Los Angeles brought her two Drama-Logue Awards and a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award. In 2010, she won the Ovation Award for Featured Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Judy in the Center Theatre Group production of In the Wake.

O'Connell's performance in Lucas Hnath's Dana H. became a defining achievement of her career. She received the 2020 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show for the role, which she originated at the Vineyard Theatre, and the New York Drama Critics' Circle honored her that same year with a Special Citation for career excellence, citing that performance among her accomplishments. When Dana H. transferred to Broadway in 2021, O'Connell won the 2022 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play.

Her screen debut came in the film Tin Men, and she subsequently appeared in a wide range of features including State of Grace, Straight Talk, Leaving Normal, Fearless, City of Angels, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Wendy and Lucy, Secondhand Lions, Imaginary Heroes, Hearts in Atlantis, What Happens in Vegas, and Synecdoche, New York. On television, O'Connell was a series regular on L.A. Doctors and made guest appearances on Kate & Allie, Chicago Hope, The Practice, Six Feet Under, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Nurse Jackie. Between 1994 and 2010, she appeared in six episodes of Law & Order, four of them as Dr. Valerie Knight, Anita Van Buren's oncologist in Season 20. In 2024, she portrayed Francis Cobb in the HBO series The Penguin, a role that earned her a Critics' Choice Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie or Miniseries and a 2025 Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The Lucille Lortel Awards also recognized O'Connell with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
