About
Declan William Bennett, born on 20 March 1981 in Coventry, England, is a singer-songwriter, actor, and playwright whose career has spanned music, television, and stage work on both sides of the Atlantic. Of Irish descent through his mother Rose, who is from Westmeath, and his paternal grandparents, who are from Dublin and Wexford, Bennett attended Christ the King Primary School in Coundon before continuing his education at Cardinal Newman Catholic School and Community College. As a teenager he performed with the Belgrade Youth Theatre and the Coventry Youth Operetta Group, appearing in Willy Russell's Our Day Out in September 1996 and in a production called Boy Band, which included several of his own compositions. He also performed with the National Youth Music Theatre in The Kissing-Dance in 1999.
Bennett's entry into the music industry came in May 1999, when he was selected to perform live on the ITV morning programme This Morning as part of a feature assembling a boy band. That appearance led to contact from Point Break, a group that included Brett Adams and David Oliver, both formerly of the UK children's television programme Byker Grove, who were signed to Warner Music and seeking a new member. The band released five singles, four of which reached the UK top 20, and an album that topped the charts in three countries in Southeast Asia, including Japan, while also reaching the UK top 40. Bennett departed the group in December 2000.
His solo recording career began in January 2005 under the pseudonym Sumladfromcov with the album The Painters Ball, released on his own label, Covboy Records. A limited-edition EP titled The Kitchen followed in May 2006. Recording under his own name, Bennett released a five-track iTunes-only EP called 10 Nelson Road in March 2007, and his second full-length album, An Innocent Evening Of Drinking, on 14 April 2008. A single titled Therapy, packaged with two remixes, was released in the United States on 27 April 2009 and internationally on 23 March 2009. The album record:BREAKUP appeared on 25 April 2011, with a live acoustic version released on 19 August 2013.
On the stage, Bennett's early professional theatre work included the West End production of Taboo, Boy George's musical, which received four Olivier Award nominations. Beginning in January 2002, Bennett played Guru Dazzle before later taking over the lead role of Billy, performing alongside Matt Lucas, Boy George, and Julian Clary until the show closed in London in April 2003. He reprised the role of Billy in the UK tour of Taboo from December 2003 through 2004.
Bennett's connection to Broadway began with the rock opera Rent. In September 2006 he took over the role of Roger Davis on the American national tour, completing a nine-month run across the United States through May 2007. He then brought the role to Broadway, performing it from October 2007 until May 2008. On 31 January 2010, he performed at the Grammy Awards with Green Day as a cast member of American Idiot, the rock opera that subsequently ran on Broadway from 20 April 2010 to 24 April 2011, during which Bennett was a member of the ensemble, understudying and performing the role of Will.
In 2013, Bennett originated the romantic lead role of Guy in the West End production of Once at the Phoenix Theatre in London, opposite Zrinka Cvitešić as Girl. In March 2016 it was announced he would take the titular role in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, a role he has reprised on multiple occasions, including in Tokyo in 2019 opposite Ramin Karimloo as Judas. In 2019 he also starred as Dale in The View UpStairs at the Soho Theatre in London, running from 18 July to 24 August. The Regent's Park Open Air Theatre production of Carousel, in which Bennett played Billy Bigelow, ran from 31 July to 25 September 2021. He created the one-man show Boy Out the City, which had a work-in-progress showcase in early 2021 before its full premiere at the Westival Music and Arts Festival in Westport, Ireland on 24 October 2021, followed by a London premiere at the Turbine Theatre on 9 November 2021.
Bennett returned to Broadway when it was announced on 8 April 2022 that he would join Moulin Rouge! The Musical as the Duke of Monroth at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, succeeding Tam Mutu, beginning 10 May 2022. He remained with the production until January 2023. On 17 October 2024, it was announced that Bennett would play Pierre Bezukhov in Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812 at the Donmar Warehouse, beginning 7 December 2024.
On television, Bennett joined the cast of the BBC soap opera EastEnders on 10 March 2014, playing Charlie Cotton, the long-lost grandson of Dot Branning, portrayed by June Brown. He exited the series in 2015 before reprising the role, with his return episode airing on 5 May 2017. He later starred opposite Ben Aldridge in the 2021 ITV and BritBox adaptation of The Long Call, playing Jonathan Roberts.
Bennett is gay and lived in New York City and London for a number of years before relocating to rural Oxfordshire. He married fellow actor and singer Fra Fee on 15 November 2024.
