About
Deborah Findlay is an English actress born on 31 December 1947 in Leatherhead, Surrey. She studied English at the University of Leeds, where she joined a theatre company, and has since built a career working primarily on stage, while also accumulating substantial television and radio credits.
Findlay's stage work spans several decades and major institutions. She appeared in the original production of Top Girls and, during the 1980s, worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company in productions of Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice. Her performance as Hilda, wife of painter Stanley Spencer, in Pam Gems' play Stanley earned her both an Olivier Award and an Outer Critics' Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play in 1997. Stanley is among her verified Broadway credits, alongside Children! Children!, with her Broadway appearances spanning 1997 to 2017.
In 2008, Findlay starred in the US premiere of Philip Ridley's Vincent River, and the following year she appeared with Judi Dench in a Donmar West End revival of Madame de Sade. Her 2013 portrayal of Volumnia in the Donmar Warehouse production of Coriolanus brought her the Clarence Derwent Award for best supporting actress. In 2016, she appeared twice on the stage of the Royal Court Theatre: as Sally in Caryl Churchill's Escaped Alone and as Hazel in Lucy Kirkwood's The Children. Her role in The Children transferred to Broadway, where it earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play in 2018. That same year, she appeared at the Bridge Theatre in London as Sister Gilchrist in Alan Bennett's Allelujah. In 2024, Findlay appeared in the UK premiere of Eline Arbo's The Years at the Almeida Theatre, reprising the role when the production transferred to the Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End in January 2025.
On television, Findlay's credits include Nurse Motte in the 1992 series Maigret with Michael Gambon, Sarah Cushing in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes episode "The Cardboard Box" in 1994, and Hilary Richards in the Midsomer Murders episode "Blue Herrings" in 2000. She played Gillian in the ITV drama The Last Train in 1999 and the recurring character Greer Thornton in four episodes of State of Play. In autumn 2007, she joined Judi Dench, Imelda Staunton, and Francesca Annis in the BBC1 costume drama Cranford as Miss Tompkinson, a role she reprised in the two-part Christmas special Return to Cranford. She portrayed Home Secretary Denise Riley in Torchwood's 2009 third series Children of Earth, and appeared in Agatha Christie's Poirot in the 2010 episode "Hallowe'en Party" as Rowena Drake. Additional television appearances include episodes of Silent Witness, Foyle's War, and a second Midsomer Murders role as Lorna Sloane in "Murder by Magic" in 2015. Findlay is perhaps most widely recognized for her portrayal of Ruth, the Defoe family matriarch, across three series of the BBC legal drama The Split, which aired in 2018, 2020, and 2022.
Her radio work includes Sally in Closed to Visitors on BBC Radio 4 in 1992, Hermione Pink in the BBC Radio 4 drama The Ferryhill Philosophers beginning in 2015, and Miss Dredger in the BBC Radio 4 drama Mr Pye in 2023.
