About
Deborah Cox is a Canadian singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer born on July 13, 1974, in Toronto, Ontario, to Guyanese parents. She grew up in Scarborough, was raised Catholic, and attended John XXIII Catholic Elementary School and Earl Haig Secondary School. Cox began singing in television commercials at age 12 and participated in talent competitions as a teenager, including an appearance on Tiny Talent Time. She also performed in nightclubs during her teenage years and began writing music around the same time. Her early professional work included six months as a backup vocalist for Celine Dion and a guest appearance on Devon's 1992 LP It's My Nature on the track "That's A Friend." After receiving repeated rejections from Canadian record labels, Cox relocated to Los Angeles in 1994 with producer and songwriting partner Lascelles Stephens.
In late 1994, Clive Davis signed Cox to Arista Records. Her self-titled debut album, featuring production from Dallas Austin, Keith Crouch, Tim and Bob, and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, was released the following year. The album peaked at number 102 on the Billboard 200, received a gold certification from the RIAA, and went platinum in Canada. Its lead single "Sentimental" reached the top five on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, while "Who Do U Love" achieved top-twenty placement in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States and topped Billboard's Dance Club Songs. The album earned Cox a Juno Award for Best R&B/Soul Recording in 1996 and a Best Soul/R&B New Artist nomination at the 1996 American Music Awards.
Cox contributed the non-album track "Things Just Ain't The Same" to the 1997 film Money Talks, and a dance remix produced by Hex Hector became her second number-one hit on Billboard's Dance Club Songs. That remix appeared on her second studio album, One Wish, released in 1998 and again executive-produced by Davis. The album incorporated more uptempo contemporary R&B and dance music, with contributions from producers including Montell Jordan, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Anthony "Shep" Crawford, and DJ Quik. One Wish peaked at number 72 on the Billboard 200 and earned platinum certification from the RIAA. Its lead single "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" became Cox's highest-charting entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number two for eight consecutive weeks, and spent a then-record 14 weeks at number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Additional singles from the album included the top-ten duet "We Can't Be Friends" with R. L. Huggar, as well as "It's Over Now" and "I Never Knew," both of which topped the Dance Club Songs chart.
Following One Wish, Cox collaborated with Whitney Houston on "Same Script, Different Cast," released as a radio-only promotional single from the compilation Whitney: The Greatest Hits. The track peaked at number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 14 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. In 2000, Cox made her film debut in Clement Virgo's Canadian drama Love Come Down, playing a nightclub singer. The film received eight nominations at the 21st Genie Awards, including two Best Original Song nominations for Cox's contributions "29" and "Our Love." In 2001, she recorded "Absolutely Not" for the Dr. Dolittle 2 soundtrack, which became her sixth number-one hit on Billboard's Dance Club Songs.
Cox's third studio album, The Morning After, was released in November 2002 on J Records, with Davis once again serving as executive producer. Producers on the project included Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jermaine Dupri, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Shep Crawford, Warryn Campbell, Johntá Austin, and Alex Richbourg. The album debuted at number 38 on the Billboard 200 and number seven on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, making it her highest-charting effort on both charts at the time. It produced two Dance Club Songs chart singles, "Mr. Lonely" and "Play Your Part."
Cox made her Broadway debut in February 2004, stepping into the role of the Nubian princess in the Elton John and Tim Rice musical Aida, replacing Michelle Williams for a four-month engagement that received largely positive reviews. She also recorded a dance remix of the musical's theme song "Easy As Life" as a promotional single that year. Cox subsequently appeared in the 2005 films Blood of a Champion and Love on Layaway, and her voice was featured in Hotel Rwanda on the song "Nobody Cares."
Her fourth and fifth studio albums, Destination Moon (2007) and The Promise (2008), were released through her own independent label, Deco Recording Group. In 2016, Billboard ranked Cox 23rd on its Greatest of All Time Top Dance Club Artists list. The following year, her single "Let the World Be Ours Tonight" became her 13th number-one hit on Billboard's Dance Club Songs, a milestone spanning three consecutive decades. Cox was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2022. An eight-time Juno Award nominee, she has won four awards and received her first Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album for her work on The Wiz.
On Broadway, Cox's credits span from 2000 to 2026 and include starring roles in Jekyll & Hyde and The Bodyguard, as well as appearances in Aida, the 2023 revival of The Wiz, and Titanique. Her stage work has also encompassed the biographical musical Josephine.
