Born January 25, 1931, in Decatur, Alabama, Dean Carroll Jones was the son of Andrew Guy Jones and Nolia Elizabeth Wilhite. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and attended Asbury University. His first wife, Mae Inez Entwistle, Miss San Diego of 1953, gave him two children. Jones got his start at the Bird Cage Theater at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, before signing a contract at MGM. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, he appeared in numerous popular Disney films. In 1973, he married actress Lory Patrick; they had one child. Together they founded the Christian Rescue Committee in 1998.

Film credits include "Beethoven," "Clear and Present Danger," "The Love Bug," "Jailhouse Rock," "The Sugarland Express," "That Darn Cat!," "Somebody Up There Likes Me," "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo," "Designing Woman," and "Never So Few." On television, he appeared in "The Love Boat," "Murder, She Wrote," "Bonanza," "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In," "Wagon Train," and "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."

In 1995, he was inducted into the Disney Legends Hall of Fame.
