About
Davis Roberts, born Robert A. Davis on March 7, 1917, in Mobile, Alabama, was an American character actor whose professional work extended across five decades, from the late 1940s until shortly before his death in 1993. He built a career that encompassed film, television, and the Broadway stage, appearing in New York productions between 1951 and 1971.
Roberts began his screen career in film during the 1940s and 1950s before expanding into television in subsequent decades. He became recognized for portrayals marked by dignity, which frequently stood apart from the stereotypical roles that prevailed in the industry during that era. Among his television credits, he appeared as Dr. Caldwell in three episodes across the second and third seasons of the NBC sitcom Sanford and Son, and portrayed Dr. Ozaba in "The Empath," a 1968 episode of the original Star Trek series.
His Broadway work included roles in Point of No Return and The Trial of the Catonsville Nine, the latter reflecting the politically engaged theatrical climate of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Beyond his performing career, Roberts was active in professional and civic organizations. He served multiple terms on the western advisory board of Actors' Equity Association. As an officer of the Beverly Hills-Hollywood Branch of the NAACP, he was among those who helped present the organization's inaugural Image Awards in 1967.
Roberts died on July 18, 1993, at the home of his brother Charles, from emphysema. He was 76 years old.
