About
David Lawrence Schwimmer was born on November 2, 1966, in Flushing, Queens, New York City, to attorneys Arthur and Arlene Coleman-Schwimmer. He has a sister, Ellie, born in 1965. His family is Jewish, and his mother built a prominent career as a divorce attorney, representing clients including Elizabeth Taylor and Rod Stewart. The family eventually relocated to Beverly Hills, where Schwimmer attended Beverly Hills High School alongside classmate Jonathan Silverman. At age ten, he had his first acting experience playing the fairy godmother in a Jewish adaptation of Cinderella, and at twelve he attended a Shakespeare workshop led by Sir Ian McKellen. He subsequently entered the Southern California Shakespeare Festival competition three consecutive years, taking first prize twice.
A drama teacher at Beverly Hills High encouraged Schwimmer to attend a summer acting program at Northwestern University in Chicago, an experience he described as both enlightening and exhilarating. After graduating from Beverly Hills High in 1984, he enrolled at Northwestern full-time, where he studied theater and speech and participated in an improv group, the No-Fun Mud Piranhas, alongside Stephen Colbert. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in theater and speech in 1988. Following graduation, Schwimmer co-founded the Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago before returning to Los Angeles to pursue a professional acting career. He also studied clown technique under Philippe Gaulier at École Philippe Gaulier.
Schwimmer made his television debut in the ABC film A Deadly Silence in 1989. Early television work included appearances on L.A. Law, The Wonder Years, and NYPD Blue, where he had a recurring role as a lawyer-turned-vigilante. His first feature film appearance came in Flight of the Intruder in 1991. He landed his first regular series role in the sitcom Monty, playing the liberal son of a conservative talk show host portrayed by Henry Winkler.
In 1994, Schwimmer was cast as paleontologist Ross Geller in the NBC sitcom Friends, a role that executive producer Kevin S. Bright has said was written with him in mind, making Schwimmer the first actor cast on the series. Friends debuted on September 22, 1994, drawing nearly 22 million viewers. The performance earned Schwimmer a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1995, and he later received a Screen Actors Guild Award for his work on the series. He also directed numerous episodes of Friends during his tenure on the show. The series ran until 2004.
During the Friends years, Schwimmer pursued film work in parallel. His first leading film role came in the 1996 romantic comedy The Pallbearer opposite Gwyneth Paltrow. In 1998 alone he appeared in Kissing a Fool, Six Days Seven Nights, and Apt Pupil, followed by Picking Up the Pieces in 2000. He also appeared in the 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, portraying Herbert Sobel.
After Friends concluded, Schwimmer expanded into stage and film work across multiple fronts. He played the title character in the 2005 drama film Duane Hopwood and began voicing Melman the giraffe in the Madagascar animated film franchise. He made his West End debut in 2005 in a leading role in Some Girl(s). The following year he made his Broadway debut in the play The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial in 2006, the same year he appeared in the dark comedy Big Nothing. In 2007, he made his feature film directorial debut with the comedy Run Fatboy Run, and in 2008 he made his Off-Broadway directorial debut with Fault Lines. His acting work that year also included the thriller Nothing but the Truth.
In 2016, Schwimmer portrayed attorney Robert Kardashian in the FX limited series The People v. O. J. Simpson, earning his second Primetime Emmy Award nomination, this time for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. In 2025, he starred as botany professor Anthony Brewer in the second season of the supernatural horror anthology series Goosebumps: The Vanishing, receiving a Children's and Family Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Performer.
