About
David Raphael Moscow, born November 14, 1974, in the Bronx, New York, is an American actor, producer, and activist. The son of Jon and Patricia Moscow, his father is Jewish and his mother, whose family is from Montana, is Mormon; Moscow was not raised in either religion. He attended Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, in the 1990s before dropping out in 1992 to track wolves for Round River Conservation Studies, marking the beginning of a long career in activism. He is married to Karen Moscow and was previously engaged to actress Kerry Washington from October 2004 to March 2007.
Moscow first gained wide recognition at age thirteen when he was cast as young Josh Baskin in the 1988 film Big, portraying the character whose wish transforms him into an adult played by Tom Hanks. Four years later, he played David Jacobs opposite Christian Bale in the 1992 musical film Newsies. His screen work continued with a leading role alongside Jessica Alba in Honey and appearances in several network television series, including Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane, in which he played Duncan Milch. He also appeared on Seinfeld as Lomez Jr. in the episode "The Van Buren Boys."
On Broadway, Moscow performed between 1994 and 2005, with credits including What's Wrong with This Picture, in which he played Artie at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, and The 24 Hour Plays 2004. He also co-developed and co-produced Lin-Manuel Miranda's first production of In the Heights alongside Kerry Washington.
As a producer, Moscow's 2012 film Hellbenders was acquired by Lionsgate for North American and foreign distribution. He made his directorial debut with the psychological thriller Desolation, which was partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign and screened at film festivals internationally, including the Wroclaw Festival in Poland. Additional producing credits include Sylvio, The Jingoist, Blind, Easy Living, and Thirst Street. Moscow also launched a Kickstarter campaign featuring a reenactment of the Zoltar wish scene from Big to fund post-production work, raising more than $70,000.
Together with his father Jon, Moscow created From Scratch, a food show in which he travels to source every ingredient needed to prepare a given recipe. The series aired its first two seasons on the History and FYI channels, followed by its third and fourth seasons on Tastemade, with a fifth season set to air on Tastemade in April 2025. In December 2025, all five seasons launched on NBCUniversal's streaming service Peacock, with a sixth season premiering exclusively on the platform in February 2026. In 2022, Moscow and his father published a book based on the series titled From Scratch: Adventures in Harvesting, Hunting, Fishing, and Foraging on a Fragile Planet, which received a gold award at the 2023 Nautilus Book Awards.
Moscow's activism has extended beyond environmental work to include housing development. In 2006, he built a mixed-income green housing facility in Harlem, and in 2007, Time Out New York reported on his continued involvement in developing sustainable and affordable housing in the neighborhood.
