About
David Kenneth Harbour, born April 10, 1975, in White Plains, New York, is an American actor whose career spans Broadway, film, and television. The son of Kenneth and Nancy Harbour, both real estate professionals, he grew up in the New York area and attended Byram Hills High School in Armonk, New York, alongside actors Sean Maher and Eyal Podell. He went on to study drama and Italian at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, graduating in 1997 as a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
Before his professional career began, Harbour performed with The Theater at Monmouth at Cumston Hall in Monmouth, Maine, from 1994 to 1997, taking part in Shakespearean productions including The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, The Winter's Tale, and Hamlet. He made his Broadway debut in 1999 in the revival of The Rainmaker, the same year he made his television debut on Law & Order playing a waiter. His Broadway career continued through 2012 and included appearances in The Invention of Love, The Merchant of Venice, both Part 1 (Voyage) and Part 2 (Shipwreck) of The Coast of Utopia, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. His performance as Nick in the 2005 revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play.
During the 2000s, Harbour built a substantial film résumé alongside his stage work. He appeared in Brokeback Mountain, portrayed CIA Agent Gregg Beam in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace, played Shep Campbell in Revolutionary Road, and appeared in State of Play as a source for Russell Crowe's character. Additional film credits from this period include The Green Hornet, End of Watch, and Between Us. On television, he returned to the Law & Order franchise in a 2002 episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and received attention for his portrayal of spree killer Paul Devildis in a 2009 episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. He held the recurring role of MI6 agent Roger Anderson in the ABC series Pan Am and played Elliot Hirsch in The Newsroom from 2012 to 2014.
Harbour's profile continued to grow in the mid-2010s. In 2014, he played the recurring character Dr. Reed Akley in the first season of the historical drama series Manhattan. The following year he was cast as Chief Jim Hopper in the Netflix science fiction horror series Stranger Things, a role that brought him global recognition. The series, which ran from 2016 to 2025, earned him two nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, in 2017 and 2018, a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film in 2018, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2017, shared with the full cast.
His film work expanded significantly in the years that followed. He starred in the title role of the superhero reboot Hellboy in 2019 and joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Alexei Shostakov, known as Red Guardian, in Black Widow in 2021, reprising the role in Thunderbolts* in 2025. He also voiced Eric Frankenstein in the animated series Creature Commandos, which began in 2024. His starring roles further include the Christmas action comedy Violent Night in 2022, in which he played Santa Claus, and the Neill Blomkamp sports film Gran Turismo in 2023, based on the PlayStation video game series.
Harbour was born and raised in the New York area and, as a young man in New York City, frequented underground poker clubs. He has stated that he personally knew the individual who served as the basis for John Malkovich's character Teddy KGB in the 1998 film Rounders. He has been open about struggling with alcoholism in his youth, noting that he began drinking as a teenager and that the habit worsened during college. He became sober at age 24 after reaching what he described as rock bottom, facing homelessness, loneliness, and thoughts of suicide. At age 26, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Harbour married English singer-songwriter Lily Allen on September 7, 2020, in Las Vegas in a ceremony officiated by an Elvis impersonator; reports in late 2024 and early 2025 indicated the couple had separated.
