About
David Eigenberg is an American actor born on May 17, 1964, in Manhasset, New York, who grew up in Naperville, Illinois as the only boy among six children. His father, Harry, was a certified public accountant of Jewish faith, and his mother, Beverly, was an Episcopalian who owned preschools; Eigenberg was raised in his mother's faith. He graduated from Naperville Central High School in 1982 and subsequently enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, where he served from 1982 to 1986 and received an honorable discharge at the rank of Lance Corporal.
Eigenberg made his Broadway debut in the original production of John Guare's Six Degrees of Separation, playing the role of the Hustler from 1990 to 1992. He returned to Broadway from 2003 to 2004, appearing as Toddy Koovitz in the original production of Richard Greenberg's play Take Me Out.
Among his early television work, Eigenberg had a recurring role on Homicide: Life on the Street, portraying a copycat sniper, and later appeared on The Practice. He played Officer Ross in a Season 3 episode of Third Watch in 2002, and in July 2004 appeared as Carl Morrissey in the sci-fi series The 4400. Additional television appearances include The King of Queens, Ghost Whisperer, Raines, ER, NCIS, Cold Case, Criminal Minds, Castle, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and Chicago Fire. He also provided the voice of Nermal in Garfield: The Movie and appeared in the film Daybreak.
Eigenberg is widely recognized for his portrayal of Steve Brady, the on-again, off-again boyfriend and eventual husband of Miranda Hobbes, played by Cynthia Nixon, in the HBO series Sex and the City. He reprised the role in the Sex and the City films released in 2008 and 2010, and again in the revival series And Just Like That... beginning in 2022. In the fall of 2012, he joined the cast of NBC's Chicago Fire as Senior Firefighter Christopher Herrmann, a role in which he has continued to appear and which was later elevated to Lieutenant and then Captain. In January 2022, it was reported that Eigenberg had been diagnosed with hearing loss, a development that informed his character's hearing loss storylines on both And Just Like That... and Chicago Fire.
Eigenberg and his wife, Chrysti Kotik, have two children: a son born in 2009 and a daughter born in 2014.
