About
David Fitzgerald Doyle (December 1, 1929 – February 26, 1997) was an American actor born in Lincoln, Nebraska, who built a career spanning stage, television, and voice acting. He graduated from Campion High School in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin in 1947. His maternal grandfather, John Fitzgerald, was a railroad builder and banker in Nebraska. His younger sister, Mary (1931–1995), was also a stage actress who died of lung cancer at age 63.
Doyle's Broadway career ran from 1960 to 1964 and included productions such as Something About a Soldier, Here's Love, I Was Dancing, Children From Their Games, and The Beauty Part. His stage work extended beyond New York; in 1964 he played Orgon in the premiere of Richard Wilbur's translation of Tartuffe at the Fred Miller Theater in Milwaukee, a production in which his sister Mary appeared as the maid Dorine. He also appeared in a revival of South Pacific, during which he met Anne Nathan, a singer and dancer who became his second wife.
Doyle is most widely recognized for his role as detective John Bosley on the television series Charlie's Angels, which ran from 1976 to 1981. He and original cast member Jaclyn Smith were the only two actors to appear in all 110 episodes of the series. He made additional television appearances in three episodes of The Patty Duke Show in 1964 and 1965, playing the father of Richard Harrison. Doyle was also a recurring guest on the game show Match Game between 1977 and 1982, typically seated on the top row beside regular panelists Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly. He appeared on one week of Password Plus in 1980, three weeks of Super Password, and on Tattletales with his wife Anne in 1982.
In voice acting, Doyle originated the role of Grandpa Lou Pickles on the Nickelodeon animated series Rugrats beginning in 1991, a role he held until his death, after which Joe Alaskey replaced him.
Doyle was married twice. His first marriage, to Rachael, took place in 1956; the couple had a daughter, Leah, born in 1961. Rachael died in 1968 after falling from a staircase. Doyle subsequently married Anne Nathan. He died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California, on February 26, 1997, at the age of 67.
