About
David Costabile is an American actor born on January 9, 1967, in Washington, D.C., of Italian descent. He earned his undergraduate degree from Tufts University in 1989 and an MFA from New York University the same year. Though widely recognized for his television work, Costabile has built a substantial career across stage, film, and television.
His Broadway career spans 1995 to 2007 and includes four productions. He made his Broadway debut in The Tempest in 1995, followed by the musical Titanic in 1997. For Caroline, or Change — the Drama Desk Award–winning musical by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori — Costabile participated in the workshop process and performed in the original production before it transferred to Broadway in 2003–2004. His most recent Broadway credit is the Manhattan Theatre Club's 2007 revival of Translations. Beyond Broadway, he appeared in 2005 as Launce in The Two Gentlemen of Verona, presented by the Public Theater as part of its Shakespeare in the Park series.
On television, Costabile has accumulated an extensive list of recurring and guest roles. He portrayed Thomas Klebanow, managing editor of The Baltimore Sun, on The Wire, and played Doug on Flight of the Conchords. His other recurring roles include Detective Rick Messer on Damages, Daniel Hardman — a former senior partner at the law firm Pearson Hardman — on Suits, and Gale Boetticher on both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. On the Showtime series Billions, he plays Mike "Wags" Wagner. In 2025, he reprised the role of Daniel Hardman in an episode of the NBC spinoff series Suits LA; Hardman had previously appeared as a recurring antagonist in Suits seasons 2, 4, 5, and 8. Among his many guest appearances, he appeared in season six of The Office as a banker evaluating Dunder Mifflin on behalf of Sabre, and starred in the television series Dig. He also appeared as Internal Affairs investigator Simon Boyd in the 2013 series Low Winter Sun and as Dr. Linus Creel in season two of The Blacklist.
Costabile's film work includes a 2009 appearance in Solitary Man as Gary, the husband of Jenna Fischer's character, and a role as Jennifer Aniston's attorney in the 2010 film The Bounty Hunter. In 2012, he portrayed Republican representative James Ashley in Lincoln. The following year he appeared in Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects as Carl Millbank and as Professor Horstein in Runner Runner. He played the Chief in the 2016 film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi and appeared as Doc McGhee in The Dirt in 2019.
In his personal life, Costabile married Eliza Baldi in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 2012. They have two children.
