About
Darrell Sandeen (July 13, 1930 – January 22, 2009) was a character actor born in Chicago, Illinois, who built a career spanning Broadway, film, and television across several decades. He was known for playing menacing or offbeat characters throughout his work in stage and screen productions.
Sandeen began his professional career as a stage actor, appearing on Broadway between 1957 and 1969. His New York credits included original cast productions of The Young Abe Lincoln, Here's Love, A Joyful Noise, and The Fig Leaves Are Falling, as well as a revival of Guys and Dolls. His Broadway work also encompassed the musical Can-Can. His stage recordings are preserved on three cast albums. Beyond New York, Sandeen performed in national touring productions of The Great White Hope, Li'l Abner, and My Fair Lady. He later remained connected to theatrical performance as a member of the Musical Theatre Guild in Los Angeles.
After relocating to Hollywood, Sandeen transitioned into film and television. His television appearances included roles on Bonanza and Route 66. On screen, he appeared in Blazing Saddles, They Call Me Bruce?, and L.A. Confidential, where he portrayed corrupt police officer Buzz Meeks in what became his most recognized film role. His later film work included Interview with the Assassin, in which he played a figure connected to a Kennedy assassination conspiracy, Pervert!, in which he appeared opposite Mary Carey, and String Theory, in which he played a character named Homeless Al.
Sandeen continued acting until shortly before his death. He died on January 22, 2009, from complications following a stroke.
