About

Ezekial Dann Florek, born on May 1, 1950, in Flat Rock, Michigan, is an American actor and film director. The son of Leonard Florek, a chiropractor, and Darlene Florek, he attended Eastern Michigan University, where he studied math and physics without completing a degree, before relocating to New York City to pursue a career in theater.

Florek built his early screen presence through supporting film roles in the 1980s, appearing in Sweet Liberty, Moon Over Parador, and Angel Heart. He also portrayed Mr. Slate in the live-action feature adaptation of The Flintstones. On television, he joined the cast of NBC's L.A. Law in 1988, playing Dave Meyer, the husband of Susan Ruttan's character Roxanne Melman, across 22 episodes through 1993. Additional television work during this period included a recurring role as a high school gym coach on the WB sitcom Smart Guy and appearances on Roseanne.

His most sustained television role began in 1990, when he joined the NBC drama Law & Order as Captain Don Cragen. Following the 1992–1993 season, NBC required creator Dick Wolf to expand the show's female cast, resulting in Florek's departure alongside Richard Brooks. S. Epatha Merkerson and Jill Hennessy replaced them, respectively. Florek subsequently directed several Law & Order episodes in 1994 and 1995, and reprised the Cragen role in the 1995 episode "Bad Faith," which he also directed, and in the 1998 television film Exiled: A Law & Order Movie, which centered on Chris Noth's character Mike Logan.

In 1999, Florek returned to the role of Cragen on the Law & Order spinoff Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, serving as the commanding captain of the titular unit. He and Wolf developed a backstory for the character in which Cragen's wife, a flight attendant, had died in a plane crash, triggering a relapse into alcoholism and involvement with prostitutes before he takes command of the Special Victims Unit. Florek remained with the series until his character was written out during its fifteenth season, with his final episode airing on January 15, 2014. He returned briefly in the twenty-first episode of season sixteen in May 2015, and appeared as Cragen via video chat in the show's 500th episode, opposite Mariska Hargitay's character Olivia Benson. In April 2022, he reprised the role in an episode of Law & Order: Organized Crime, reuniting Cragen with Christopher Meloni's character Elliot Stabler, and appeared again in that series' second season finale. The character of Cragen was established as deceased at the start of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit's twenty-seventh season.

On stage, Florek appeared on Broadway in 2016 in the play The Front Page. Eastern Michigan University recognized his career by awarding him an honorary Bachelor of Arts on December 13, 2008, and an honorary Doctorate of Arts on December 14, 2008, during the school's winter commencement ceremony, at which Florek also served as keynote speaker. His brother, Dave, is likewise an actor, and both siblings trained at Eastern Michigan University. Florek and his wife, Karen, an artist, reside in Venice, Los Angeles.
