About

Daniel Sully, born Daniel Sullivan on September 6, 1855, in Providence, Rhode Island, was an American circus performer, stage actor, and playwright who built a career spanning circus work, legitimate theater, and vaudeville during the latter decades of the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth.

Sully began his professional life as a circus performer before transitioning to the stage, where he achieved recognition as both an actor and a writer. His 1884 play The Corner Grocery, which drew from Edwin Waugh's The Chimney Corner, became one of his most remembered works. His Broadway appearance came in 1900 with The Parish Priest, a dramatic comedy written by Daniel J. Hart in which Sully portrayed the central character, Father John Whalen.

By 1902, Sully had formed a professional association with John Fitzgerald Murphy, an actor, playwright, and political activist. In 1904, Sully served as the principal actor in several of Murphy's productions, including The Irish Statesman, a role that Carroll Johnson had originally performed as early as 1892, and The Old Mill Stream, both staged at the California Theatre in San Francisco on March 6–7 and March 13 of that year respectively. He also appeared in Murphy's play The Chief Justice in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sully continued working in legitimate theater and vaudeville until shortly before his death.

A member of the Elks Lodge in Baltimore, Maryland, Sully was married to Louisa A. Fox, daughter of George Fox, a pantomime artist known for the production Humpty Dumpty. Sully died on June 25, 1910, at his farm near Woodstock, New York.
